School Visits

Schools are welcome by arrangement to visit our Brampford Speke Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

This site, in the loop of the River Exe, has the Exe Valley Way running through it. The area is notable for its river morphology, in particular how a typical meandering river can effect the development of the floodplain. It is the perfect place to observe how the process of erosion and deposition effects the movement of the riverbanks and there are good examples of ox-bow lake formation. It is an unspoilt area ideal for studying the flora and fauna of a floodplain and to see the evidence of the old and extensive badger sett that has developed on the embankment of the disused railway line that runs through our land.

All educational visits must be booked in advance by contacting Sue Satchell, the owner of this SSSI site, on 01392 841785 She was a Primary School Teacher until July 2008, a Devon Wildlife Watch Leader and runs ‘The Exe Valley Tea Shop’. Sue will help with the planning of any visit, provide a risk assessment and accompany school parties if they visit on a Tuesday or Thursday.

Facilities: Toilets and refreshments are available in The Exe Valley Tea Shop and arrangements can be made for packed lunches to be eaten there if the weather is poor. If preferred a lunch of soup and a roll followed by homemade cake and a drink at £3.00 per head can be booked in advance.

Safety Considerations: This site is open all year but the Exe is wide and deep here and is hazardous when the fields are flooded.

Road Directions: This area can be reached by taking the A377 north from Exeter in the direction of Crediton and following a minor road to the village of Brampford Speke.
